Welcome to Material Intelligence a digital magazine that celebrates the human capacity to understand and shape the physical world around us. Each issue takes a deep dive into one commonplace material with contributors who come from every discipline and walk of life. Together, the stories they tell illuminate vital, at times unexpected connections: between art and science, history and contemporary life, the tangible and the intangible. Material Intelligence is published by the Chipstone Foundation.
Editors
Glenn Adamson, Lead Editor of Material Intelligence, is a curator, writer and historian based in New York. He has previously been Director of the Museum of Arts and Design; Head of Research at the V&A; and Curator at the Chipstone Foundation. His most recent book, Craft: An American History, was published by Bloomsbury in 2021.
Natalie Wright is a historian of material culture and disability and Contributing Editor of Material Intelligence. Wright is a doctoral candidate of Design History at the University of Wisconsin—Madison. Her dissertation, “Functional Fashions: A History of Dress and Disability in the United States, 1950-1975,” has been supported by fellowships from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
